Celebration Farm uses AJCA registration, type evaluation, and genomic testing programs. Before shipping their milk through Westby Co-op Creamery, the farm makes sure their product is coming from the best cows. When making their breeding decisions, the farm looks at the cow’s fat and protein percentage, negative stature, and udder quality. These traits are what led to the success that the farm had in December 2022 production. The herd had an average of 7.82% fat and 5.03% protein. Some cows were even testing 10% fat consistently and others were close to 12%.
Celebration Farm believes they have the most “Jerseyest” Jerseys. Their Jersey’s production of cheese is greater than all other breeds when food and water intake is taken into consideration. They weigh on average 850-900 lbs and produce 14,000 lbs per year with 8% fat and 5% protein. These Jerseys are outside everyday of the year and moved twice daily in the grazing season. In late April to October, the pasture is the cow’s main foraging source.
This story of success is all because of the genetics that make up these producers. Some notable bulls used include Golden GDK Vivaldi, Piedmont Nadine Furor, Forest Glen Avery Action, and a few other home-bred bulls.
The farm wants to continue their success by accomplishing their goal of shortening their calving window to March and April, average 8% fat and 5% protein in November and December, and average 6% fat and 4% protein.
