New York Meeting 2019

The New York State Jersey Cattle Club held its annual meeting on January 12, 2019, for a business meeting and to discuss plans for the upcoming Annual Meetings of the American Jersey Cattle Association (AJCA) and National All-Jersey Inc. (NAJ) Members gathered at the Saratoga Hilton in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., the location of the national events June 26-29, 2019.

Business Meeting and Officers

AJCA Director Alan Chittenden, Schodack Landing announced that Scott Holcomb will be filling the AJCA-NAJ area representative position vacated by Sara Barlass. He also reported on the national Jersey activities for 2018, noting the Jersey breed is faring well in the current dairy economy. There was increase of 2,605 recorded lactations in the nation from the previous year. New York ranks seventh in the nation for Registered Jerseys with 4,030 head at the end of 2018. Nationwide, a total of 49,097 females were genotyped in 2018, going up 91.68% from the previous year. He noted that Jersey Canada also reported record numbers for 2019, increasing their national Jersey herd by 11%.

Greg Lavan, Manager of Jersey Marketing Service, was featured as a guest speaker for the day. He discussed the New York State Jersey Sale as being online-only in 2019 to reduce costs and strain on volunteer work. Purchases could be made via JerseyBid.com as is successful with many other JMS sales.

Rebecca Ferry, Johnstown, co-chair for the AJCA-NAJ Annual Meetings, brought the group up to date on the tentative meeting plans and schedule. Additional details were discussed for each farm visit, having a recreational golf day and securing busing.

The current slate of offices will serve the New York State Jersey Cattle Club in 2019: president, Brian Chittenden, Schodack Landing; vice president Rebecca Ferry; co-secretaries, Sandra Ferry, Johnstown and Bethany Beiersdorf, Freedom; and treasurer, Alan Danforth, Cobleskill.
