March 9 is the deadline to register for the fourth annual Jersey Value-Added 101 Workshop. This year’s event is going to be held in Bettendorf, Iowa, at the Isle Casino Hotel Bettendorf on March 24 and 25.
Attendees will hear from industry professionals, Neville McNaughton, master cheese maker and facility designer; and Jim Gage, business strategist and marketing professional. They guide you through the basic process of starting a business, as well as what to consider when deciding which product to make and why. Throughout the event, some of the topics they will cover include but are not limited to are: product opposites and challenges; product evaluation and consumer demand; facilities and technology; food safety and regulatory requirements; marketing and sales; and gaining expertise and training.
In addition Jersey value-added business owners, Kilgus Farmstead, Fairbury, Ill., and Marcoot Jersey Creamery, Greenville, Ill., will present to the group about their success stories. Furthermore, the group will travel to nearby Cinnamon Ridge Farms, Donahue, Iowa, where they will tour the facilities and hear more about their story. They make cheese and sell their Jersey beef on their operation.
