Thirteen Jersey youth will receive scholarships from the American Jersey Cattle Association (AJCA) totaling $32,100 – the largest in Jersey history. They will receive their awards November 9, 2019 during the All American at the annual Junior Banquet. The recipients are all pursuing higher education at universities and colleges in nine states with degrees in agriculture and society, animal science, dairy science and veterinary medicine.
Thirty-seven students applied for scholarships from the AJCA this year. Support comes from eight different funds managed in perpetuity by the AJCA.

Russell-Malnati Scholarship for Advanced Studies – $5,000
James Holton, Dawsonville, Ga.
Enrolled in the University of Georgia’s (UGA) College of Veterinary Medicine, James previously earned his undergraduate degree in animal science from the university. On campus, he competed on the dairy judging and dairy challenge teams and chaired the dairy science club’s commercial dairy heifer show. With aspirations to become a food animal veterinarian, he helps with the family veterinary business, All Animals Veterinary Hospital, and operates H2 Jersey Farm with his twin brother, Matthew. The herd was established in 2012 with three show heifers and now numbers 40 head. An active Jersey youth, James attended Jersey Youth Academy in 2013, has participated in the Pot O’Gold program and has received several other scholarships.

William A. Russell Memorial Scholarship – $2,750
Lydia Chittenden, Schodack Landing, N.Y.
Hailing from Dutch Hollow Farm LLC, a 750-cow Registered Jersey herd she operates with her family, Lydia is currently a freshman at SUNY-Cobleskill. This dairy science major has a herd of 53 animals at her home farm and has a special interest in calf management and herd genetics. During the summer months, she travels an extensive show circuit which culminates with the All American Junior Jersey Show. Lydia attended Class VI of Jersey Youth Academy and has placed in the National Jersey Youth Production Contest several times. She also was an active member of 4-H programs, being part of the team that represented New York at the 2018 Pennsylvania All-American Dairy Judging Contest and attending the 2017 National 4-H Dairy Conference.

Jack C. Nisbet Scholarship – $2,750
Samantha Schuessler, Antigo, Wis.
After getting involved with the Jersey breed at 12-years-old, Samantha has hit the ground running. The California Polytechnic State University junior is a dairy science major and agriculture communications minor. She is a former secretary for the Wisconsin Junior Jersey Breeders Association, attended Jersey Youth Academy in 2017 and placed fifth in this year’s National Jersey Youth Achievement Contest. Samantha is the secretary for the Los Lecheros Dairy Club, an advocate for the school’s outreach program with the California Milk Advisory Board and a member of the school’s dairy judging team. She served as the communications intern for CentralStar Cooperative and takes photos and videos at California and Wisconsin shows for Cowsmopolitan.

V.L. Peterson Scholarship – $2,750
Kathryn Bosley, Malone, N.Y.
A junior at SUNY-Cobleskill majoring in animal science, Kathryn grew up on her family’s 50-cow Registered Jersey dairy working alongside her family. A lover of the annual ‘show-cations,’ she has paraded the colored shavings with her Jerseys throughout the country. Kathryn recently created the Cousins and Cows blog on Facebook and Instagram to educate the public about dairy topics. She has conducted research on the farm to help with herd management strategies. Her junior year, she researched somatic cell count and mastitis pathogens and used the results to prevent mastitis at Tierney Farm. Kathryn was a part of Class V of Jersey Youth Academy in 2017 and is considering advanced degrees in areas of genetics or reproduction of dairy cattle.

Paul Jackson Memorial Scholarship – $2,000
Hayley Fernandes, Tulare, Calif.
With aspirations to become an agriculture lobbyist and serve in politics, Hayley has worked to educate herself and get involved in the agriculture and dairy industries. While she is fairly new to the Jersey breed, she has expanded her herd to number four cows and seven heifers within her family’s Holstein farm. Hayley is currently a sophomore at Cal Poly majoring in dairy science with a law and society minor. At Cal Poly, she will serve as the publicity director this year for the Los Lecheros Dairy Club and has competed on both the university’s dairy judging and dairy products evaluation teams. A former Tulare County Dairy Princess, Hayley was active in a variety of organizations throughout high school. She attended Jersey Youth Academy in 2019.

Cedarcrest Farms Scholarship – $2,250
Marie Haase, Somerset, Wis.
With Jersey roots that trace generations, Marie has been involved with her family’s mixed herd of 500 Holsteins and 25 Jerseys since childhood. She is a sophomore at UW-River Falls with a major in dairy science and a minor in agriculture business. Marie competed in five national-level dairy competitions in 2018 as a member of the Osceola FFA and Polk County 4-H teams. Recently, she competed in the Royal Highlands Shows in Scotland where she tied as fifth-high individual. At UWRF, Marie is a member of the honors program, belongs to the university’s dairy club and is a UW-River Falls Falcon Scholar.

Bob Toole Youth Award – $2,000
Seth Carson, Newbury, Vt.
Seth is a college freshman studying dairy science at Virginia Polytechnic and State University. He grew up helping with all aspects of his family’s fourth-generation Jersey farm, Harkdale Farms Inc. Seth has a particular interest in genetics and reproduction and has worked to revitalize the embryo transfer program. He enjoys showing with his family and is in charge of the show string for the herd which exhibits regularly at local shows, state fairs and the Eastern States Exposition. Throughout his 4-H career, Seth has been active with mentoring younger members in the dairy project and as a member of the local 4-H dairy judging team.

AJCA Directors’ Scholarship – $2,500
Erin Leach, Linwood, Kan.
As a senior at Oklahoma State University studying animal science with a business option, Erin has seen to it to get herself involved in the industry in a plethora of ways. At OSU, she serves as the calf manager for the Ferguson Family Dairy Center, is the treasurer for the OSU Dairy Science Club and a teaching assistant for the school’s animal breeding course. This past summer, she interned at Budjon Farms where she worked with calves and show animals. She attended Jersey Youth Academy, placed eighth in the 2018 National Jersey Youth Achievement Contest and has exhibited numerous times at the All American.

Morris B. Ewing ABS Global Genetic Performance Scholarship – $3,250
Allison Foster, Portage, Wis.
Jersey youth program enthusiast Allison is a senior studying dairy science at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. She attended Jersey Youth Academy in 2013 and received the inaugural Anne E. Perchard Challenge Award in 2016. Allison also was named the first alternate in the National Jersey Queen Contest in 2017 and 2018 and placed fourth in this year’s National Jersey Youth Achievement Contest. Also active at her university, she is a member of the Pioneer Dairy Club and has competed on the dairy challenge team. Allison is also the president of the Sigma Alpha Agriculture Sorority and belongs to the Pioneer Chapter of the National Agri-Marketing Association.

The Lineweaver Scholarship – $3,500
Catherine Savage, Dickerson, Md.
A familiar face throughout the Jersey world as the 2018 National Jersey Youth Achievement Contest, Catherine is a junior at Virginia Tech. A major in dairy science with minors in agriculture business and animal and poultry science, Catherine has served on the offer teams of the dairy club and young farmers club. She also competed on the university’s dairy judging team in 2018. For Jersey involvement, she attended Jersey Youth Academy in 2017 and has served as the Maryland Jersey Queen.

Anne E. Perchard Challenge Award – $350
Grace Howe, Waukon, Iowa
As an agriculture and society major at Iowa State University, Grace has set a long-term goal of being involved in agriculture policy. She is a former Iowa Jersey Princess who has also served as the co-editor of the Iowa Jersey Today magazine since January 2017. Grace has been active on the tanbark trail, exhibited members of her 28-head Registered Jersey herd locally, at the Iowa State Fair and World Dairy Expo. In 2018, Grace was the tenth high individual at the national dairy judging contest for FFA. Grace placed tenth in the 2018 National Jersey Youth Achievement Contest.

Reubon R. Cowles Youth Award – $1,500
Haley Huffard, Crockett, Va.
A recent master’s degree graduate from Virginia Tech, Haley’s research focuses on the interrelationships among dam microbiome, calf microbiome and calf health. Long-term, she is hoping to develop microbial inoculation protocols and tools for newborn calves that will decrease neonatal calf diarrhea and pre-weaned deaths. Haley also spent time researching human digestion differences between A1 and A2 milk proteins. She grew up on her family’s 400-cow Registered Jersey Dairy, Huffard Dairy Farm, and helped in the operation of Duchess Dairy, an All-Jersey business owned by the Huffards and Joey Blankenship.

Reubon R. Cowles Youth Award – $1,500
Jayme Ozburn, Lewisburg, Tenn.
Jayme plays an integral role in the operation of his family’s farm, Ozburn Dairy. In addition to working at the home farm, Jayme has also worked and managed at two other dairies in the area. A freshman at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, he is majoring in animal science/animal industries. Jayme attended Jersey Youth Academy in 2019 and has been involved in a variety of Jersey activities. He and his family regularly exhibit at local, state and national shows. This past year, he showed the Supreme Champion of the junior dairy show at the Tennessee State Fair.

Fred Stout Experience Award
Brennan Topp, Orrville, Ohio
The 2019, Jersey Marketing Service intern, Brennan assisted with the preparation, staging and wrap-up work for the company’s public auctions, online and private treaty sales. He is currently a student at the Ohio State University Agricultural Technical Institute (OSU-ATI) and will graduate in 2020 with an associate of applied science degree in dairy production and management. He’s actively involved on his family’s registered dairy cattle farm, Toppglen Farms, and others while being in school. Brennan has participated in the show ring and dairy judging activities since he was a youth.

Fred Stout Experience Award
Abigail Grimm, Milaca, Minn.
Abigail’s internship was at the Broumley Dairy in Hico, Texas where she focused on herd management, something she hopes to pursue in her professional career. She is a sophomore at Ridgewater College majoring in dairy management. Abby has worked at Brickton Genetics as an assistant herd manager since 2012 where she oversees the herd’s feeding, youngstock records and reproduction. She exhibits her Registered Jerseys at local, state and national shows and was a member of Class VI of Jersey Youth Academy.
