Yogurt Before Meals May Reduce Inflammation

A study funded by the National Dairy Council, the non-profit organization funded by the national dairy checkoff program, shows that low-fat yogurt consumed before meals may reduce risk for inflammation.

Research was conducted at the University of Wisconsin-Madison on healthy, pre-menopausal women and reported in the May 15, 2018, issue of The Journal of Nutrition.

The study explored the hypothesis that eating yogurt before a high-fat, high-calorie meal may help reduce inflammation by improving the integrity of the intestinal lining, thus preventing endotoxins from crossing into the bloodstream.

The news is promising for the prevention of chronic inflammation, which is a factor in inflammatory bowel disease, arthritis and asthma and associated with obesity, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease and other chronic diseases.
